Fiona Holmes has a particular interest in cardiovascular,neuroscience and perfusion education, and has been involved in the running of MSc Clinical Perfusion Science since its inception. She is particularly keen on student support, academic skills training and inspiring students into research.
Fiona graduated from the University of Kent with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry in 1990 where she continued on to do a PhD in Neuroscience before moving to the University of Bristol in 1994. Fiona has had a 25+ year research career where her focus has been on neurodegeneration and pain. Her involvement in teaching organisation and delivery has grown since 2015, particularly masters level programmes in the Medical School, including MRes Health Sciences Research and MSc Translational Cardiovascular Medicine. She has been involved with the MSc Clinical Perfusion Science since 2017 when the educational partnership between the University of Bristol and Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland was initiated, and in 2022 she established an MSc Cardiovascular Perfusion (online). In 2021 she obtained her Advance Higher Education Academy Fellowship Certificate. She is currently an external examiner for Bruneland Galway Universities. Fiona has recently taken on the role of Education Director of the Bristol Medical School which involves oversight of the programmes in the school, which includes the medical undergraduate programme, intercalated programmes and postgraduate taught programmes. In 2023, Fiona was pleased to be invited to be a member of the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists and is looking forward to working more closely with members of the College.
