Graeme Nias

SCPS ECMO Chair

Title

Senior Clinical Perfusion Scientist, Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge

Role

I was elected to the Executive Committee at the SCPS AGM in 2024.

Clinical Interests

I have extensive experience in all areas of adult cardiac surgery, including complex aortic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, ECMO, and Ventricular Assist Devices. As ECMO lead I played a key role in developing Papworth Hospital’s ECMO retrieval service. I also have a keen interest in teaching, particularly involving the use of practical simulations. I have designed and taught several internal and external courses relating to cardiopulmonary bypass and ECMO, as well as mentoring numerous perfusion students through their training.

Professional Profile

I graduated from the University of Kent in 2007 with a BSc in Biomedical Science and began my Perfusion training at Papworth Hospital in 2008, gaining accreditation with the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of Great Britain and Ireland in 2010. I completed an MSc in Translational Cardiovascular Medicine with Bristol University in 2021. The title of my dissertation was “A systematic review and future perspectives on the use of miniaturised extracorporeal circulation (MECC) in coronary artery bypass grafting”, which I subsequently presented at the SCPS AGM in 2023. I have been an examiner for the Society since 2018.
